- Firsthand reports of N-frames shooting loose are well-documented and have been since they were first used in silhouette competition. I don't know of a more educated sixgunner and no more talented revolversmith exists than Hamilton Bowen. Here's an excerpt from his book "The Custom Revolver":
"The venerable S&W N-frame guns, based on a design suited to low-pressure cartridges such as the .44Spl and .45Colt, are taxed to the limit by the .44Mag cartridge. The rigors of silhouette competition or high-volume recreational shooting dramatically shortens the service life of S&W's Model 29 .44Magnums. The frames imply do not have sufficient cylinder-bearing area and sectional thickness to handle high pressure cartridges, although contemporary Model 629's are much tougher, thanks to improvements in the frames, yokes and cylinders and the addition of a thumb-latch lock.
Ruger's Redhawk was designed specifically for the .44Mag. No other double action revolver has a combination of barrel shank diamter, cylinder diameter and mechanical design so well suited to the new generation of high performance hunting cartridges including the heavily loaded .45Colt, the .454Casull and the various .50 caliber cartridges...."
- Citation :
- I have owned, handloaded, and shot both the S&W 629 and the Ruger Redhawk/Super Redhawk for a long, long time. They are both superior revolvers in terms of accuracy and strength and as long as factory ammo is shot in each there is no appreciable difference in performance. However, both the Redhawk and the Super Redhawk have longer cylinders which allow for the chambering and firing of very hot, longer ammo such as Garrett. The shorter cylinder holes of the 629 prevent these "hotter" rounds from being chambered and therefore shot.
- Citation :
- In the early 80’s just before the big transition to autoloaders by law enforcement an official 10,000 round test was conducted for the U.S. Border Patrol. One of the reasons was the failure of the S&W M19 and S&W M66 to hold up to the numerous rounds being fired in training and qualifications. The failures were the result of firing high-pressure loads and not .38 Special rounds.
The test guns were S&W K frames and Ruger Security-six in .357 Magnums. Two of each brand was tested. Records were kept on rounds fired, failures, and accuracy at different levels.
The paper on the test showed that the S&W started more accurate. But as the rounds accumulated the Ruger maintain its level of accuracy and exceed the S&W pistols. The first S&W failed between two and three thousand rounds, and if I recall correctly the second one failed around the four thousand rounds count. Both Rugers successfully completed the 10,000 rounds without failure.
This test concerned me because I was carrying a S&W on duty. A large number of S&W M19 & M66 were being pulled from the field and repaired by the gunsmith. A number of departments were switching to the new S&W 686 because of the K-frame failures. I had a brand new K-frame out of the box that could not be certified for field use until repairs were made. It’s a fine handgun now, but it was not when it left the S&W factory.
The S&W 686 life span was cut short in law enforcement holsters when autoloaders took over the LE market. While some 686’s stayed in service the majority off officers made the switch to an autoloader.
A good friend of mine had a number of S&W revolvers. I enjoyed shooting his 4-inch M29, but like his others he sent it to the S&W custom shop after purchase.

- Citation :
- A gun with a transfer bar has a hammer face shaped like an upside-down L. It also has the firing pin mounted in the frame. When the hammer is down, the short leg of the L rests on the frame, and the rest of the hammer cannot touch the firing pin.
When the gun is fired, a little piece of steel (called a transfer bar) which is hooked to the trigger slides up to cover the rear of the firing pin just before the hammer falls. The hammer strikes this piece of steel and the blow is transferred to the firing pin.
With traditional Single Actions, with the firing pin mounted on the hammer, you can put the gun on half-cock, which holds the firing pin off the primer. But if you strike the hammer even a light blow, the gun will fire. In the old days, the classic accident was in saddling a horse -- as the rider tightened the girth, the horse might move a bit, and the near-side stirrup, thrown up on the saddle, would slide down and whack the hammer of his six-gun.
A six-gun with a transfer bar can be carried safely with six round in the cylinder. A more traditional gun, without the transfer bar, must be carried with the hammer all the way down on an empty chamber.
